Singapore Biennale 2008 (Part 1)

Between You & I  by Anthony McCall was my most favourite exhibit at the Biennale, though i only got to visit 2 out of the 4 venues. McCall gives physicality to light rays, by using projection of light in a dark space, accompanied with haze. 

The art is so named because the "wall" created by the light creates this space between people, the creator attempts to illustrate how this "wall" can at times merely be a perception of the gap between 2 people, looks concrete, yet one is able to walk through it. 

Reminds me of how in BolehLand, despite it being multiracial, there isn't that big a gap between races, and this wall between races, more often than not is merely a perception in our minds. If only one would step out, he/she would realize, the wall, ain't quite there at all. Also, walls between people, You & I, if only we reached out, we would realize, the wall isn't quite there.

The picture doesn't do justice at all to the actual exhibit, but the pics we tried to snapped either turned out almost pitch black, or the rays of light were not well defined enough. Nothing beats standing in the exhibit itself of course. 

Diang (Daylight version)

This next piece, to put simply, really, is bamboo sticks with rubber thongs stuck on the top...one would simply remark:"what? that's art too?" By the way, the exhibit is called Diang.

This exhibit really brings out the whole "less is more" idea. We were at this venue towards dusk, so we got a night view of the exhibit. The artists are a husband an wife pair (Alfredo Aquilizan & Isabel, Filipinos that reside in Brissy, Australia).

Thats all for now, from the Marina Bay exhibition venue (though there were like plenty of other exhibits), which was like super duper hard to find...cause the whole area is under construction (the new casino and all...) and the exhibit is in containers (As seen below), go figure....containers in a construction site..who would imagine that there are exhibits inside =P
