Myth # 1: Psychologist can read minds
Truth: Though we can't read minds, experts are able to identify concealed and falsify emotions!
The face is indeed a dynamic canvas on which people communicate their emotional states.
What gives your emotional state away? Microexpressions! (e.g. movement of facial muscles as opposed to just identifying the presence/absence of a smile/frown)
What have research shown so far? (Porter & Brinke, 2008)
1. It is easier to fabricate a neutral emotion (wonder whether this explains why people like to act "cool" cause it masked their true emotions)
2. Masking emotions lead to higher blink rates (referring to your eyes)
3. It is easier to create convincing displays of happiness than negative expressions, apparently because we are more frequently happy than sad..so we are able to fabricate this emotion more professionally.
Apart from your facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, eye movements, etc. are all give away of your true emotions, and hence, though we can't read minds...it sometimes appear that we do!
