Mr Shichida is convinced that all babies are indeed born geniuses and given the right nurturance would blossom into geniuses! I was initially rather skeptic of the whole Shichida Method craze over in Singapore, but having witness how "brilliant" my niece was...i must admit, there might be some truth to it. I listened to the few audios on the site, in the name of enhancing my knowledge in terms of child development enhancement techniques, and perhaps looking for gaps/flaws in the approach. Recently, i heard that another of my friend's friend child attends lessons in the Singapore branch, and apparently is absolutely brilliant as well. But before we all get too excited and want to enrol our child the moment she/he is born...here are some thoughts...(few things to bear in mind...the lessons are quite expensive...and they start your child as young as a month or 2! talk bout kiasu-ness!)
My thoughts
1. Is there a possibility that the children enrolled are perhaps already smart to begin with, seeing that, if their parents were smart, they probably did well in school, or manage to kick off a business and hence can afford expensive fees. Hence the population in which they claimed have benefited from the program are essentially smart to begin with? (similarly, with companies that thrives above the rest, they often only hire people who are smart, dynamic, etc...hence its not really about how great the company is at the end of the day, they just employ smart recruitment strategies)
2. What would these kids be doing by the time they turn 2/4/6? or when they enter school, perhaps of course the same parents would also be able to afford to send them off to an international school or i dunno..school for genius? but i have often found in my 20++ years of life in this planet we call earth, that being somewhat too brilliant in comparison to your peers often results in one being ostracized or our very own Malaysian genius Ms Yusof who decides to be an "escort" (in which her mum blogs to dispute!)
3. To my knowledge at least, genetics contribute at least 50% to our intellect, and that means that despite all the available techniques available, which ones can claim to push the boundaries of nature? Seriously, i think its unfair to say some people are just born stupid, but rather, i personally feel that there are multiple aspects that one can excel it, say dance for example? Its quite Asian to place so much emphasis on being book smart..and its not surprising then that the technique was pioneered by Jap then centers open here in Malaysia as well as Singapore.
All that said and done, i seriously would like to research more into this technique ;) and perhaps pop in to the center? (pretend i am applying for a position? or could i say... pose as a Kiasu parent?) Perhaps they would convince me otherwise, but i certainly feel that 2 known child is still too small a sample to proof a technique workable...though there are thousands of other testimonials, its often a personal contact that carries more weight.
And if you are parent or parent to be, be assured that the Shichida method, though amazing as it sounds, require commitment by the parents as well. It requires you to help stimulate your child's five senses daily at home! But i am guessing it might be worth your while?
